last night there was heavy rainfall in this area with a bit of thunder and lightening, but mostly lots of rain. somewhere between 1am and 2am I was awakened and heard kittens crying under the delapidated wooden porch attached to the back of our house. (When we have heavy rain, lots of water accumulates under the porch, thus the rotting wood after all these years). we know a free-roaming cat had a litter recently. her (first and) last litter was under the porch. I thought I heard two distinct kitten cries and perhaps a third. Momma cat who is less than 2 yrs old showed and was franticly rushing about to each of several holes between rotted boards, as if trying to devise a rescue plan. David said he saw her (Weepy) carry one kitten across the top of the porch. there wasn't anything we could do in the dark and the rain and with our cat colony we have to avoid interfering. mid-morning today I checked around the porch in the area I heard the cries and couldn't find anything. then I saw a black kitten through a hole at a distance from where the sounds were heard last night. HOORAY. Saw three kittens. eyes are probably not open yet. Weepy had rescued her kittens and moved them to higher ground, but still under the porch. after I had gone back into the house, I noticed through the kitchen window that Weepy was examining the hole where I saw the kittens, then she returned to under the porch using a common entrance the ferals use. I gather she had seen me from a distance checking the area. She waited until I was gone then quickly checked that I'd not disturbed her litter. awesome morning for me. via Facebook/Karen R.
